Yi-Lin Chiang, Assistant Professor of Sociology at NYU Shanghai, has been elected Secretary/Treasurer of the Asia and Asian America Section (AAAS) of the American Sociological Association (ASA). This section promotes the study of Asia and Asian American experiences within sociology by organizing paper sessions, roundtables, and social events at the ASA’s annual meetings. It also recognizes distinguished scholarship through best book, research paper, and student paper awards. Chiang is the first scholar based outside the U.S. to serve as Secretary/Treasurer of AAAS.
Professor Chiang joined NYU Shanghai in 2023. Her research focuses on educational stratification and elite reproduction in Chinese societies, with an emphasis on the role of cultural capital and its connection to students’ status systems and educational outcomes. Her book, Study Gods: How the New Chinese Elite Prepare for Global Competition, published by Princeton University Press in 2022, received the prestigious Pierre Bourdieu Award for Best Book in the Sociology of Education from the ASA’s Sociology of Education Section.
Congratulations, Professor Chiang!
