About the Symposium

The Symposium on Urban Social Survey and Quantitative Social Science 2025 aims to unite experts and early-career scholars with shared research interests to exchange insights on social change and its impact on individuals’ daily lives, social attitudes, and inequality in Chinese metropolises. Discussions draws on data from the Guangzhou Metropolitan Panel Survey (GPS), which, alongside the Hong Kong Panel Study of Social Dynamics (HKPSSD) and the Shanghai Urban Neighborhood Survey (SUNS), provides unique opportunities for comparative research in China’s two most economically dynamic regions: the Yangtze River Delta and the Greater Bay Area. This symposium reflects CASER’s commitment to fostering methodologically rigorous, interdisciplinary research on various facets of Chinese societies, both in local contexts and from comparative perspectives. The event is co-organized by CASER at NYU Shanghai and the Joint Urban Survey and Intervention Lab (JUST Lab).
