Two Books Published by CASER Faculty Members

Dec 31, 2024

In the end of 2024, CASER faculty members recently published two more books, one in English by Routledge, and one in Chinese by Truth & Wisdom Press (格致出版社).

Understanding Inequality in China: The Contribution of the Chinese General Social Survey (ISBN 9781032845692), edited by Xiaogang Wu and Jia Miao, provides an overview of inequality and stratification in contemporary China. A rare and timely resource, it presents key research on the topic published in Chinese Sociological Review from 2011 to 2023, using one or multiple waves of Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS) data, reflecting the advancement of the field over the past decade.  At the junction of the 20th anniversary of the CGSS (2003-2023), this volume draws on CGSS data to uncover dynamic and evolving inequality in China by examining topics such as education stratification, income inequality, career and intergeneration mobility, and how they are shaped by the socialist/post-socialist institutional structure such as the household registration (hukou) system, the work unit (danwei) system. This collection significantly advances the understanding of Chinese social stratification, extending far beyond scholars’ initial interests in the social consequences of the market transition.

Changing Social Stratification in China (《变迁中的中国社会分层》)(ISBN 9787543236028), contains selected 11 papers Professor Xiaogang Wu has published solo or coauthored since 2010, covering topics related to income returns to education, the hukou system and social stratification, job mobility and income inequality, gender income inequality in urban China, fertility decline and educational gender inequality, and among others. The book summarized a stage of research work on Chinese social stratification conducted by Professor Wu and his junior collaborators.

Early this year, CASER members published three edited books, two in English by Routledge, and one in Chinese by Shanghai Academy of Social Science Press (上海社会科学院出版社). They are Fertility and Childcare in East Asia: Gender Dynamics and International Support (ISBN 978-1-0326-9629-4), edited by Xiaogang Wu, Muzhi Zhou and Man-Yee Kan,Computational Social Science: Application in China Studies (ISBN 978-1-0326-9646-1), edited by Xiaogang Wu, Yongjun Zhang and Tianji Cai, and Bluebook of Chinese Parenting and Child Development (《中国家庭教育与儿童发展蓝皮书》) (ISBN 978-7-5520-4328-0), edited by Professors Xiaogang Wu and Jia Miao.
