We invite you to delve deeper into their diverse research backgrounds and explore the valuable expertise they are poised to contribute, benefiting both the Center and the broader community.
Welcome all new members to CASER!
Dr. Yi-Lin Chiang has joined the Center in Fall 2023 as a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Sociology at NYU Shanghai. Before joining NYU Shanghai, she was Associate Professor of Sociology at National Chengchi University (Taiwan). Chiang received her PhD in University of Pennsylvanian in 2017. Her research focuses on educational stratification and intergenerational status transmission in greater China. Her ethnographic work examines the processes and outcomes of elite status transmission. In other lines of research, she uses panel data from the Taiwan Youth Project to explore how schools and families shape educational inequality. Her book, Study Gods (Princeton University Press), received the Pierre Bourdieu Award for the Best Book in Sociology of Education from the Sociology of Education section of the American Sociological Association.
Dr. Sangsoo Lee received his PhD in Sociology and Demography from University of Pennsylvanian in 2023. He has joined the Center in Fall 2023 as Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Sociology. He studies family, gender, and inequality using quantitative methods. Much of his work adopts a cross-national comparative perspective, with a regional focus on Korea and other East Asian countries. Professor Lee is currently pursuing three lines of work: 1) gender dynamics within marriage and family, emphasizing couples’ socioeconomic status effects; 2) investigates issues related to marital formation, dissolution, and repartnering; and 3) examines how children’s life chances and experiences are gendered and stratified across families and societies.
CASER looks forward to welcome Dr. Zixi Chen, who will join NYU Shanghai as Assistant Professor of Practice in Computational Social Science in Jan 2024. Dr. Chen received her PhD in Measurement and Quantitative Methods at Michigan State University in 2020. She is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Minnesota’s Learning Informatics Lab and a visiting scholar at Infinite Campus, a leading US EdTech company. She is interested in applying computational social science methods to understand the technology-transformed educational and social behaviors. Trained as a methodologist, Zixi’s research interests also include quantitative methods, computational social science methods, and critical big-data framework. Alongside her research, Zixi’s primary teaching interests lie in the realms of computational social science and quantitative methods.
CASER also expects to welcome Dr. Man Xu, who will join NYU Shanghai as Assistant Professor of Practice in Public Policy in Jan 2024. Man Xu received an Master of Public Policy (MPP) in 2016 and Ph.D. in Public Affairs in 2021 (Minor in Population Studies), both from Humphrey School of Public Affairs, University of Minnesota. Man is currently a postdoctoral research associate in Social Research and Public Policy at NYU Abu Dhabi. Broadly, her research aims to advance a greater understanding of racial/ethnic and class inequality and their intersections over the life course. She studies inequalities and disparities in labor market outcomes, foster care and incarceration, family formation, and mortality. Xu’s work is interdisciplinary as she combines methodological approaches from public policy, economics, and demography.
A new postdoctoral fellow, Dr. Jun Yin, has joined CASER in September, 2023.
Dr. Jun Yin earned his Ph.D. in Social Science from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). His research interests span social stratification, urban sociology, and child development. He has a broad interest in the social implications of housing issues in Chinese cities. His work delves into the political impact of homeownership in Hong Kong and studies how overcrowded housing affects individuals’ mental health in Chinese cities. Currently, he is engaged in a project examining the role of residential mobility in shaping residents’ sense of belonging and collective efficacy in Shanghai, along with underlying driving mechanisms.
CASER provides an excellent research platform for graduate student training. In partnership with the NYU Graduate School of Arts and Science (GSAS) and the NYU Department of Sociology, NYU Shanghai launched a PhD program in Sociology since Fall 2020. The NYU Shanghai-ECNU Joint Graduate Training Program (NET) also offers Ph.D. and Master’s programs in Sociology. NYU Shanghai faculty recruits and mentors graduate students at East China Normal University (ECNU) through this program. In Fall 2023, CASER is pleased to welcome two new Ph.D. students, Mr. Marco Laghi and Miss Rui He (NET Program), as well as three new Master’s students, Jiaxu Chen, Minghao Tang, and Yiming Zhu (NET Program). They will all embark on their academic journey with the Center.
